Puppy bites can hurt. Sometimes puppies nibble gently and other times blood is drawn. Regardless, it’s normal. Puppies, like young humans, explore the world with their mouths. And if you’ve ever seen puppies play with one another, it’s full of biting.
Biting can be reduced, but it’s still going to happen from time to time. We recommend allowing gentle play biting in moderation. The hard stuff should be stopped right away. We recommend getting up and walking away if a hard bite occurs. You can just walk away or you can step over a gate. Doing so for 30 seconds or so will help your pup see that hard bites causes you to go. (This is the opposite of what they want.)
It’s very important to have lots of appropriate options for pups. Chew toys are crucial. Focus on using toys to interact with your pup. If that’s where all the fun is, your pup will want to do more play with toys.
