Is Your Dog Ready For Some Football?

Writer's picture: Kevin DugganKevin Duggan

Football season starts this week. This made me think, do you have a plan in place for your dog and the gatherings you’ll be hosting? It doesn’t have to be an elaborate plan. But being proactive can set everyone up for success.

When visitors arrive

For overexcited greeters you’ll definitely want to either use a leash or a gate. This will prevent your dog from running up and jumping. If everyone is arriving around the same time you’ll also want to consider giving your dog a special treat like a frozen stuffed kong. This will help be a distraction while everyone arrives. For fearful dogs, you’ll probably want to avoid having the gatherings.

Preventing counter surfing

There may be lots of tasty (and possibly harmful) snacks within reach. Your options include:

1. Completely managing to prevent your dog from having access to where the food is.

2. Proactively having your dog do a down/stay for random food rewards

3. Giving your dog freedom but keeping a close eye so you can use your “leave it” cue as needed.

Don’t be upset if your dog does grab something. It will happen from time to time.

When your team scores

This is the perfect time to cue that “high five” you’ve been working on.
