My neighbor across the street has a dog that can hang out on his porch with him without a leash, without rewards and without the threat of punishment. She can do this when people and dogs walk by. She shows some interest but never leaves the porch.
It’s probably safe to say that most people would love it if their dog would do the same. The thing is, most dogs aren’t going to do that naturally. Many dogs will really, really struggle in that scenario.
While we cannot completely change a dog, we can use training to change behaviors. The best place to start is to figure out what your dog is currently able to do and also figure out what your end goal is. From there, the plan involves many steps to connect the first and last step.
