Why Perfection Is Unrealistic



Getting behavior to happen reliably is hard. Think about how much work goes into your own behavior. How hard was it to reach that goal you had? Now, instead of just controlling your own behavior, you have another being that has their own motivations and hard wired behaviors.


To be a perfect dog trainer or pet parent, we have to ensure that no reinforcement happens when the unwanted behaviors occur and that reinforcement occurs whenever the wanted behavior occurs. This is hard. And honestly, even if we somehow are perfect at it, there are still going to be times when our dogs don’t do exactly what we hope they’ll do.


No one is perfect.
